ABOUT THE BUTTA HOUSE
The Butta House, powered by Bold Crumb House, is a Detroit-based bakery and storytelling brand founded by entrepreneur, former educator, and mother Jennifer Lyle.
Known for its nationally recognized desserts and strong community following, The Butta House operates through a non-traditional business model, serving customers every Saturday at Detroit’s historic Eastern Market farmers market without a storefront. Through weekly pop-up experiences, The Butta House serves over 175 customers each weekend while building community through food, storytelling, and culture.
Jennifer’s journey began years ago while attending Howard University, where she first discovered her love for baking and creating experiences that brought people together. After graduating, she joined Teach For America and taught in Atlanta Public Schools before later attending Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Miami to continue pursuing her passion for food and hospitality.
After returning to Detroit, Jennifer officially launched her bakery business and quickly built a loyal following around her signature desserts. But after facing personal challenges and navigating the realities of motherhood, including supporting one of her sons through social-emotional challenges, she made the difficult decision to step away from her business for almost three years to focus on family.
Years later, Jennifer rebuilt the company with a new vision: creating a business rooted not only in food, but also in flexibility, storytelling, family, and community impact.
Today, The Butta House continues to grow through farmers market experiences, seasonal activations, national cookie shipping, and original storytelling experiences inspired by family, confidence, and imagination. In Fall 2026, Jennifer will release her first middle-grade fantasy novel, Koa and the Kingdom of Hidden Secrets, which will be bundled alongside select baked goods as part of the brand’s evolving storytelling experience.
In addition to its weekly market presence, The Butta House is also expanding into immersive cultural events, including its annual Thanksgiving Experience, a Detroit-centered holiday celebration inspired by the thousands of customers who have supported Jennifer’s pies and desserts over the years.
The Butta House exists to create more than desserts. It exists to create connection, nostalgia, storytelling, and community, one experience at a time.
